Oregon car pileup during hailstorm injures 6

Several people were brought to Portland-area hospitals after a 3-car accident in northern Oregon. The accident took place during as hail was falling.

A vehicle traveling west on U.S. Highway 26 suddenly spun out of control and into the oncoming lanes of traffic. The out-of-control car struck two vehicles, one of them head on, and then eventually rolled onto its side. The driver claims that a pickup truck struck him and caused him to spin.

Accidents involving vehicle rollovers can result in serious injuries or fatalities. The driver who lost control of his car escaped serious injury, but others involved were not so lucky, even though they were all wearing safety belts. At least one of the victims was listed in serious condition.

Thankfully, an infant involved in the crash appears to have avoided serious injury, as his father -- the driver of the vehicle that started the chain reaction -- had placed him in a child restraint seat. Authorities took the child to the hospital for observation.

Particularly in the winter months, dangerous weather may require that motorists in Oregon adjust their driving habits accordingly. In fact, one could argue that despite posted speed limits, a driver has a duty to slow down and use greater caution in inclement weather. Those who fail to do so and cause an injury crash may face liability for negligence.

With winter arriving in the Portland area, drivers need to exercise adequate caution. Those who get injured by a negligent driver may wish to consult with an attorney in order to understand their rights more fully.
