Caretaker's job at stake after alleged theft incident

Simple theft may be less serious compared to bank robbery, armed robbery and identity theft, but it still has a profound effect on a victim. In Oregon, a 20-year-old female caretaker was arrested recently for allegedly pawning an item she stole in November. The woman is facing several theft charges in connection with the incident.

According to the reports, the woman allegedly stole two pendant necklaces from a couple residing in an assisted-living senior housing community in the Bethany area of west Portland. The accused woman worked at the community as a caretaker and cleaned the couple's home. She also took care of the husband, who suffers from dementia, whenever his wife was out. In late November, the wife notified authorities after discovering that a pair of necklaces was missing from a jewelry box. Police said the accused woman pawned one necklace she had stolen and left the other one on the victim's front door.

As a result, the caretaker was charged with theft by receiving, theft and criminal mistreatment. Her employer, Affinity Home Care at Bethany Village, has been notified about the theft arrest.

Theft allegations can carry life-altering consequences for a suspect. They can affect an individual's employment status, resulting in job loss or job demotion, and a loss of employment references and opportunities. If the alleged crime violates federal law, then the potential penalties can be severe, ranging from longer prison sentences to large fines.

Being accused of theft in Oregon is something to take seriously, particularly if it is a federal theft charge. The outcome might be mitigated if the defendant exercises protects their civil rights and crafts a strong legal defense.
