Portland teenager faces federal child pornography charge

Possession of child pornography is a serious crime anywhere in the country, including Oregon. The distribution, possession and production of child pornography are federal offenses that can lead to lengthy prison sentences and hefty fines and have other life-altering consequences.

Recently, an 18-year-old Portland teenager with a history of sexual offenses was charged with possession of child pornography and uploading child pornography to Internet sites in August and September 2012.

The suspect also was arrested in January 2013 for public masturbation on the playground of an elementary school in southeast Portland.

The suspect has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges. A federal prosecutor asked that the teenager be kept in custody pending trial, but his attorney asked that his client instead be monitored at home. A federal judge approved with the stipulation that the defendant wear a monitoring device and be restricted to his home unless he was applying for a job, going to school or meeting his attorney.

The teenager routinely visits a psychiatrist and has been described as cooperative with a Multnomah County counselor.

Fortunately, the defendant has an attorney on his side who can protect his best interests and work to prevent a criminal conviction.

Federal charges are complex and bring serious punishments with convictions, and people need to know their legal rights and criminal defense options.

In Portland, a federal child pornography crime could have severe punishments. These can include very long prison sentences in a federal facility. With the right defense, however, these punishments may be reduced.
