Former OSP trooper faces child pornography charges

As wonderful as the Internet may be in connecting Americans, including Oregonians, to the world around them, it has its downsides. Nowadays, people can easily access all sorts of information and materials using not only personal computers and laptops but also smartphones and tablets, making them both victims and perpetrators of a wide variety of Internet crimes such as online fraud, theft of other people's sensitive information and money and downloading child pornography.

When someone is caught for any of these crimes, serious repercussions follow, including the possibility of time in prison. And sometimes those who are caught really should know better.

This is probably the case of a 52-year-old former Oregon State Police officer who was recently arrested on several child pornography charges. The suspect was living in Northern California when a warrant for his arrest was issued following an investigation by the Oregon State Police, U.S. postal inspectors and the sheriff's department in Mono County, California.

After his arrested, the suspect was extradited to Astoria in Clatsop County, where he will be formally indicted on child pornography charges.

Once the suspect is indicted, a date for a courtroom trial will be set. He should seek legal assistance immediately to increase the chances of getting charges dropped or reduced or being acquitted if the case goes to trial. A professional who understands the federal court system can help the defendant explore the legal avenues that can bring the best possible results.

Any Oregon resident who has been similarly charged with a federal child pornography crime or faces charges of possessing child pornography should enlist the help of a legal professional with a broad understanding of how federal prosecutors approach their cases. This may be the only way a defendant can protect his or her best interests before and during a trial.
