Man faces federal charges for alleged sex trafficking

Unlike criminal charges on a local or state level, federal offenses can come with more serious penalties. The fines may be more expensive and potential prison sentence longer. Federal prosecutors aggressively pursue charges in federal court. Despite such odds, Oregon residents who are facing federal charges still have a good chance of clearing their names if they can build a solid legal defense. A Salem, Oregon, man facing federal charges may heed this advice as he fights sex trafficking accusations.

According to the court filing, the 35-year-old man allegedly used psychological tactics, rape and physical abuse to coerce two women into prostitution. He also supposedly transported the women from one state to another for prostitution. The man started the prostitution ring after he met another prostitute, who was his partner in the ring. Upon gaining "control" of the women, he allegedly trafficked the women in Oregon, several areas on the East Coast and California. The women eventually escaped and related their story to investigators.

The man was arrested in a Salem apartment, less than an hour's drive south of Portland. His partner was also arrested. The charges indicated that the suspect and his partner allegedly tried to intimidate the women so that they would recant their statements. If convicted, the man could face 15 years in prison, which is a minimum sentence for a federal sex-trafficking charge.

In addition to expensive fines and lengthy prison sentences, Oregon residents facing federal allegations should understand that while a plea deal is possible, it is more difficult in federal court. For that reason, it may be best to prepare an aggressive defense with guidance from an experienced criminal law professional. This type of defense should not only center on scrutinizing evidence, witness accounts and victim testimonies but also on violations of a suspect's rights as well.
