Convict's girlfriend faces federal charges after recorded calls

Oregon residents may be interested in learning that monitored telephone calls from a man behind bars to his girlfriend led to her arrest. A 39-year-old woman from another state will likely now be focusing on defending the two federal charges she is facing. Her boyfriend is due to be released from federal prison -- where he is serving time for drug crimes -- in November 2018.

The woman's recent arrest followed a March incident, two days after her boyfriend was arrested for selling cocaine. Authorities apparently recorded calls made by him from prison, instructing his girlfriend to retrieve something that was buried at a particular location in the backyard of their house. It was during these digging activities that the federal agents arrived with a search warrant.

The woman allegedly told federal agents that the hole she was digging was for burying an urn, but they took over the digging and discovered cash totaling $20,000. She was arrested on a recent Tuesday and charged with making a false statement and preventing seizure by removing property. She was released on a bond of $50,000 and ordered not to discuss any details about the case with witnesses -- including her boyfriend.

Reportedly, it is not common for federal authorities to arrest the girlfriend or wife of a man who was convicted of a crime for which she was not charged. This woman's legal counsel can scrutinize the legality of the monitored phone calls and the procedures during the execution of the search warrant. Oregon residents who are facing similar charges may find comfort knowing that an experienced criminal defense attorney can navigate the defense of federal charges in pursuit of the best possible outcome.
